New law seek to address the increased labor demand arising from big projects, particularly those involved in major infrastructure projects.

Those big projects involved in major infrastructure projects such as the expansion of the Paks II nuclear power plant and the construction of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line.

Under the proposed amendments, guest workers from third countries would find it easier to obtain work permits in Hungary, with permits potentially valid for up to five years. This extension would not only apply to the workers themselves but also to their family members, who could benefit from simplified procedures for obtaining residence permits in the country. Currently, the Immigration Act stipulates that permits for workers from third countries are valid until the completion of the specific development project they are employed in or for a maximum of three years. However, the proposed changes would allow for longer-term residency for workers involved in these key projects.

While the proposed amendments do not specify the countries from which workers can come, the nature of the projects suggests that Russian workers may be involved in the Paks II expansion, while Chinese workers may participate in the Budapest-Belgrade railway construction.

Currently, Hungary hosts approximately 120,000 guest workers, but the government anticipates the need for a much larger workforce, possibly reaching 300,000 to half a million workers in the coming years.
